Karting4MND supported by MATE Bike UK

Racing4Charity, the fundraising partnership between David Brabham and Bill Williams, will stage a charity endurance kart race with the sole aim of raising funds for The Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA), at Thruxton Kart Centre on Thursday 26th August.

Taking place on the eve of the BTCC race weekend, Karting4MND will host 18 teams of between four and six professional drivers, racing team members and the wider motorsport fraternity, all joining together to raise funds to help MNDA further vital research to support people leaving with the disease.

Public are welcome to attend the event (certain restrictions are in place) - full details and tickets can be found here

The Gideon Williams Trophy

MND affects each person in a different way.  Gideon's hands and arms were the first part of his body to be affected and this means he can no longer drive a kart.  It was Gideon's wish that his race helmet be turned into The Gideon Williams Trophy (to eventually be known as The Gideon Williams Memorial Trophy, but as he says hopefully not for another year or two!).

With the resurrection of Bill and David’s legendary annual kart race, KARTING4MND and the inaugural trophy presentation will take place on Thursday August 26th 2021, at Thruxton.

Three stories, One disease

Gideon Williams

Gideon Williams is the inspiration behind the return of the Racing4Charity partnership and the creation of the Karting4MND charity kart race at Thruxton.

Gideon was diagnosed with MND in September 2019. A successful mortgage Broker who also worked as a mechanic with Richard Lloyd Racing for many years, he was fit and regularly enjoyed leisure karting. Within 12 months, Gideon had become so weak that he had to hang up his racing helmet and he now needs help with basic everyday tasks such as washing and dressing.

Gideon’s family and friends will be taking to the kart track at Thruxton to help the MND Association raise funds for vital research for those living with this despicable disease.

The winners of the inaugural Karting4MND event will also have the honour of being the first to etch their names on The Gideon Williams Trophy.

Neil Cunningham

Karting4MND will also be staged in memory of Neil Cunningham – the hugely popular racing and stunt driver who passed away from MND in 2016 at the age of only 53. Neil’s racing career spanned a multitude of formulas, while he also appeared at Top Gear Live and in the James Bond movie, “Quantum of Solace”.

Despite being forced to give up his career when he was diagnosed with MND in 2010, Neil worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for Motor Neurone Disease research.

Many of Neil’s racing colleagues and friends will be joining Karting4MND at Thruxton in his honour. The fastest Karting4MND team on the night will also receive the inaugural Neil Cunningham Trophy, created by Thruxton.

Salvo Cachia

Salvo Cachia was a racing driver, TV stuntman and Top Gear Stig, but has also been diagnosed with MND. The disease affects him in a different way to Gideon and he is still able to drive karts.  Salvo is currently taking part in a research trial based around DNA and genetics, alongside the MNDA.  We will update more details of the trail when we are able to.

David and Bill would like to pay tribute to Salvo Cachia, long time supporter of racing4charity who, despite his illness, will be competing and has entered two teams in the Karting4MND event to support raising funds for the research that he is now part of.
